Issue 153 of The Walking Dead proves to be a critical issue due to events that have occurred in recent issues. Negan has recently escaped and is heading toward the Whisperers, which threatens the 4 communities. Negan and Brandon are planning to tell the Whisperers that the 4 communities are planning attack on them, in hopes to start a war between the two groups. Now while this is occurring many members of the communities are recognizing that the peace they once had is gone and are growing suspicious of the people surrounding them. Issue 153 does an excellent job of reintroducing Negan into the comic, Rick’s reaction to Negan, and how the people of the 4 communities feel about what is occurring to them.

The Good:

The comic reintroduces a free Negan into the comic. This Negan is similar to the old Negan in both personality and look as he is commanding authority and wants his own plans. Furthermore, Negan realizes that he can use Brandon to help his own motives and goes along with his plan to see the Whisphers. Yet as they reach the Whisperer’s border Negan kills Brandon and walks away to carry out his own plan. This shows how Negan’s imprisonment has not curtailed his personality but has made him more dangerous now that he is free. Furthermore, the comic confirms how dangerous Negan is and Rick wastes no time in sending Michome and Aaron to track him down. This is done as Negan is presumed to be heading to the Whisphers and processes information that the 4 communities are planning a surprise attack. This information would create a disadvantage for the 4 communities and result in what Rick has built to be destroyed, thus stopping Negan is crucial. Outside of the new threat of Negan the comic captures a general emotion that many people in the 4 communities feel, which is recognizing that the peace they once knew is gone. Many citizens react to this in different ways. In particular, Dante leads a group back to the hilltop, pressing his group hard to get back their quicker, as he is paranoid of being attacked. While a citizen in the Alexandria Safezone shoots Marco, thinking he is a Whisperer, as he has not seen him before. These two incidents represent many people are paranoid and do not trust each other due to actions that the Whisphers have taken. So for the first time in The Walking Dead we see how civilians are reacting to fighting and defending themselves from a time of peace.

The Bad:

Issue 153 of The Walking Dead is a wonderful issue that gives fans what they want while moving the story along in an interesting way. Now the only problem the comic has is that it requires the readers to infer certain aspects. In particular what has caused many of the citizens, such as Dante, to realize that the peace they once knew is gone. Issue 152 to issue 153 it is like night and day as the attitudes of the citizens has changed and the issue does not explain the circumstance that caused the change.

The Verdict:

The Walking Dead, issue 153, is one of the best comics to come out in the month of April. This is due to how it reintroduces one of the most lovable Walking Dead characters of all time, Negan. Furthermore, the comic focuses on the citizens and how they are affected by a new threat. Both of these events show how fragile and complicated the circumstance Rick and the 4 communities are in, which opens up many possibilities where the comic can go in the next several issues. The Walking Dead issue 153 from a single-issue perspective was enjoyable as it gave the readers a lovable character back and a citizen’s perspective on the changes that are occurring. The comic was fantastic as it establishes how delicate the 4 communities are while they prepare for war against the Whisperers. Without a doubt this is one of the best issues of The Walking Dead in a long time.
