Pokémon has been around for over 20 years and as a result of that many characters have been introduced throughout the years. The first 2 characters introduced in the series are the rivals Red and Blue who were given the mission of completing Professor Oak’s Pokedex. Now 20 plus years later Red and Blue have been confirmed to be returning to what appears to be the biggest Pokémon game yet. But who are Red and Blue exactly?
Red :
Red is originally from Pallet Town and was former best friends with Blue. At the age of 11 Red became interested in Pokémon, due to Blue not wanting to play with him. One day Professor Oak called Red and Blue into his lab and allowed them to pick a starter Pokémon and handed them a Pokédex to document the different Pokémon species. With his first Pokémon Red began to explore the various regions of Kanto capturing and challenging gym leaders, always one step behind his rival Blue. Throughout Red’s journey he faced off against the group known as Team Rocket who’s goal was to steal Pokémon and cause trouble. This led up to Red facing various leaders of team Rocket including their leader Giovanni and defeating him. As a result Red became responsible for causing Team Rocket to disband. Following this Red qualified to challenge the elite 4, the top 4 trainers in Kanto. Eventually he defeated them to challenge his rival Blue, and defeated him to become the new Pokémon Champion of the Kanto region.
Red’s journey continues following his championship win on the Sevii Islands where he is assisting Celio, who is attempting to build a machine that allows for communications to occur with Honen. In the process of helping him Red runs into former Team Rocket grunts who are assumed to be the ones who reformed the group in Johto. Red is last seen 3 years later waiting on Mt. Silver training and waiting for trainers to come and challenge him to a Pokémon battle. Red’s counter part in the anime is Ash Ketchum.
Blue :
Blue Oak is similar to Red as he is originally from Pallet Town, is Red’s rival and is the grandson of Professor Oak. He initially follows a similar path as Red, as he receives his first Pokémon and a Pokédex at the same time. Yet he always is ahead of Red either in catching Pokémon or obtaining Gym badges. He differs from Red as he has developed the reputation that he does not care about Pokémon. During the Silph Co. situation with Team Rocket who had taken control of various Pokémon, Blue decided that Red should take care of it without any support. This captures a major difference between them and their views on Pokémon. Furthermore, Blue was first to win all 8 badges and challenge the Elite 4 and become the new Pokémon Champion of the Kanto Region. After losing to Red and Team Rocket disbanded, Blue was approached to take over the Viridian City Gym and when he is defeated to handout the Earth Badge. Blue is the counterpart to Gary Oak in the anime.
Now, after almost 20 years both Red and Blue have been confirmed to appear in Pokémon Sun and Moon, which is slated to come out this November. As a result of their return it should be interesting how they are incorporated into the game and how old and new fans will react to their return.
