The Good, The Bad, The Verdict: Dr. Fate

DC Comics has released 12 new comic titles in the month of June. One of these titles is Dr. Fate, originally created by Gardner Fox and Howard Sherman. The character has been the catalyst for major events that have taken place in the DC Universe, including Infinite Crisis, which can be purchased here. Despite inspiring events in the DC Universe, Dr. Fate has been underutilized and less respected. The team of Levitz and Liew change the way Dr. Fate is viewed in the first issue of the newly launched title: Dr. Fate. The first issue can be picked up here.

The Good:

Dr. Fate brings diversity into the DC Universe. The entire comic is different from other titles as the main character, Khalid, is an Egyptian-American medical student who has a connection to ancient Egyptian gods. The diversity continues as Khalid has traits that are hero-like and coward-like, which is unique in a superhero and to some degree makes him relatable. The comic does not use Greek or Roman mythology, but rather uses Ancient Egyptian Mythology and religion as a basis for the superpowers and villains. These elements, along with the dialogue each of the characters have throughout the issue, bring the story to life. The art throughout the comic is a combination of bold and indie elements creating a unique style that is extremely rare in DC Comics. The comic is a breath of fresh air capturing diversity in both story and art.

The Bad:

The issue story is very similar to the other titles that DC Comics released this month. These similarities will eventually disappear as the comic goes into the second and third issues. The other problem is that a prologue was released online. This prologue is crucial to understanding the comic. It is an annoyance to read the prologue before the issue can be fully enjoyed. Both the problems that the issue presents are minor, causing slight inconvenience, but will be straightened out as the series goes on.

The Verdict:

Both Marvel and DC Comics historically have had poor diversity with their heroes. In recent years both these companies have begun to increase diversity. Dr. Fate is a big step for DC Comics increasing their diversity in the story, character, and art. Furthermore, the comic is written and drawn well and revitalizes this interesting character. The team of Levitz and Liew produced a great 1st issue and what looks to be an amazing series in the future.
