Animes Perfect for Christmas

poster-2

The home of anime is viewed as secular country yet they succumb to the holiday sprit. Most shows in other countries tend to have a Christmas episode that features the characters celebrating the holiday. Some animators and directors felt that having the present of one Christmas episode was not enough and have created other Christmas animes. So buddle up, sit by the fire and unwrap the presents of Itsudatte My Santa!, Sailor Moon S the Movie: Hearts in Ice and Tokyo Godfathers.

Itsudatte My Santa!

If you loved Love Hina, which can be purchased here, then this is the perfect Christmas present for you. Itsudatte My Santa! Is a single chapter, promotion manga drawn by Ken Akamastu. The manga was received well and was transformed into a 2 episode OVA in 2005. The story features a boy who hates Christmas due to his parents naming him Santa (San-chan). Mai, who is a student at the Santa Claus Academy, is having trouble with her magic as she can only conjure things that start with “San”. As a result of her predicament she is sent to cheer up San-chan and to change his view on Christmas. During this process she falls in love with him making his life better. The OVA has fan service with a Christmas themed story that captures the spirit of the holiday season in a comedic way.

Sailor Moon S the Movie : Hearts in Ice

No Christmas can be complete without Sailor Moon S the Movie: Hearts in Ice. The movie was released in 1994 and is based off of Naoko Takeuchi, The Lover of Princess Kaguya and Hans Christen Anderson’s The Snow Queen. The plot of the movie is simple as Princess Snow Kaguya lands on earth and attempts to freeze the planet. As a result the Sailor Scouts, alongside a Santa Claus dressed Tuxedo Mask and Chibi-Usa have to fight and destroy the Princess Kaguya. The anime movie has a Christmas/ wintery feel to it as the setting is snowy and dark. Furthermore, the anime movie adds context clues such as Princess Kaguya’s henchmen are referred to as Snow Dancers and with Tuxedo Mask dressed as Santa implies that Christmas time is near. Overall this anime movie is a perfect movie for fans of Sailor Moon as it tells a new story with a slight seasoning of holiday fun sprinkled in.

Tokyo Godfathers

Tokyo Godfathers is by far the craziest Christmas anime movie ever created. The story focuses on three homeless individuals who each have secrets. Gin is a middle aged alcoholic, Hana is a trans woman who was a former drag queen and Miyuki is a run away girl. On the eve of Christmas these three find a baby while going through the trash, with a note stating to take care of her and a clue to find her parents. The three set off to find the baby’s real parents. As they follow each clue secrets are revealed, which explains the course of action they have taken. The movie ends with the baby being returned to her rightful parents on Christmas Day. This anime movie is a nice addition to any anime collection but is exceptionally valued around the holiday season as it captures the themes of love and family.
