Image Comics is known as a diverse company with many different titles that cut across many genres. One of these titles is Oddly Normal; issue 9 can be purchased here, written and illustrated by Otis Frampton with assistance from Tracy Bailey.

The Good:

This issue is a sweet, easy read. The main focus of this issue is to find Oddly a birthday gift. In finding her a birthday gift the group explores many different components of Ragnar’s lab with hope of finding the right gift. With each new section explored a new element of science is examined ranging from evolution to artificial creation of life. Yet these concepts are kept at a basic level, which keeps the comic at an easy level to understand. The comic ends on a positive note with the right gift finding Oddly rather than her finding it. This part of the story captures the emotion and feeling of receiving a perfect gift from somebody. To capture any realistic emotion in comics is a difficult task and to capture an emotion that all people can feel and relate to is even harder, which is done in this comic. Oddly Normal issue 9 is a fun, sweet, and relatable issue that most, if not all people can connect with.

The Bad:

The major flaw with the issue is the amount of time it takes to read. Comics are supposed to entertain a reader for a set amount of time this comic was written and drawn at a pace that was too quick. As a result the entertainment value of the comic is significantly lesser than if the comic was at a slightly slower pace. In story telling pacing is one of the most important elements so the fact that this comic was paced at such a high speed is a deterrent.

The Verdict:

Oddly Normal, issue 9, despite it being a quick read, is a different comic than most comics currently out on the market. This comic utilizes a new style that combines new school with bold lines with a new interpretation of classic literature character such as Frankenstein and Dracula. Furthermore, this issue has captured the emotion every person can relate to when they obtain a gift that they are satisfied with. The style, the plot and the new interpretation, along with the emotion that is compiled into Oddly Normal issue 9 makes this issue an interesting and easy read. If you have the time it should be purchased here.
