The Good, The Bad, The Verdict Elsewhere issue 1

Missing people have always garnered attention; people are curious about their stories. Elsewhere, written by Jay Faerber and art by Sumeyye Kesgin, sets out to explore what has happened to Amelia Earhart and D.B Cooper, two of the most famous Americans to ever go missing. Yet, the comic adds a twist to their story as both of them have landed and were captured by an evil tyrant, Kragen, who rules over Korvath. Thus their survival is tied to a rebellion group that is opposing Kragen, as both Amelia and D.B Cooper begin a new chapter in their lives in joining the rebellion.

The Good:

The entire concept of Amelia Earhart transitioning from explorer and pilot to a rebellion fighter is a wonderful concept. Amelia Earhart has many stories and theories attached to her life and they have been thoroughly explored over and over again. Yet, this comic presents and sheds a new light on her character as she is exploring the new alien world of Korvath. While exploring this world she becomes involved with a rebellion force, which aims to overthrow the current leader in order to save her navigator Fred. This reveals her true character, as she is willing to sacrifice her own wellbeing and join the rebellion to help free Fred. Joining the rebellion forces also reveals that she is courageous. She is an explorer and a pilot not a fighter but is willing to lend her unique skills to help people out. In revealing both of these characteristics the comic paints a new picture of Amelia Earhart, showing her character transitioning from a pilot from Kansas to joining aliens as a rebellion fighter.

The Bad:

The comic relies heavily on the concept of Amelia Earhart becoming a rebellion fighter with the intention of overthrowing an evil warlord. As a result the entire comic is built around this one concept and fails to have second and third tier sub-plots infused into the story. Furthermore, there is a lack of making any character besides Amelia have any emotion or connection to the reader and the current story arc in the comic. As a result of this the lack of connection it is hard to fully relate to the struggles that the world of Korvath is going through and why a rebellion needs to occur.

The Verdict:

Elsewhere is an interesting comic as it takes a person that everybody knows, Amelia Earhart, and tells a new story about her. This story combines her feats as a pilot with fantasy, war, and rebellion to demonstrate how she has changed from a pilot to a rebellion fighter. While this comic provides a new story, it is entirely rooted by her character and the countless theories that have surfaced about her disappearance. While this comic is an interesting read and changes how you think about Amelia Earhart it only does that because of all the rumors, myths, documentaries, and conspiracy theories that surround her disappearance.
