New comics are released every month by different companies trying to capture or appeal to an audience that they have lost touch with. One new comic that came out on September 16 is Tokyo Ghost, which has appeal to many different fans. The comic, based on the first issue, is an action packed dystopian comic that explores attempts to escape from the dystopian world and gain freedom.
The Good:
The first issue is an exciting issue as it features action from start to finish. Some of the action scenes include gun-fights, motorcycle chases, and hand to hand combat, all which keep a reader engaged as the story progress. Primarily involved in these actions are the two main characters. The main characters are immediately well received as they are both considered to be bad-asses due to their actions throughout the first issue. Furthermore, the two characters, Led Dent and Debbie Decay, foil each other as one provides a skill the other does not have in their job as law enforcement. The comic naturally exposes the setting and introduces an interesting and under explored concept. This is that the city they work in is a dystopia and people are turning away from the physical world and are escaping through technology. Rather than Led and Debbie following suit they are attempting to escape and made a deal with their employer to do one last job to return back to the physical world rather than the technological one. This concept is different than what most comics currently explore and is a fresh idea in the comic world.
The bad:
The first issue could have been smoother when first introducing the characters and the world that the comic is set in and transferring to action. This as a result causes confusion and misunderstanding of crucial information that can be important in understanding the story later. Furthermore, the story use video game terminology which many understand, but some might not. Thus the comic separates its audience with the use of words and possibly deters readers.
The Verdict:
Tokyo Ghost is one of those comics that should be read despite its slight problems. The comic series looks promising as it is exploring a different topic than most comics explore but is including action and other elements that attract readers to comics. This comic has a few deficits but it can easily be fixed as the comic progresses along with its readers. Tokyo Ghost, issue 1, is the start to a comic series that you do not want to miss.
