Skottie Young is well known in the comic world for his famous baby variant covers of the Marvel Universe. Yet he has never created his own comic, despite it being a dream of his, until now. The comic is called I Hate Fairyland, which is a hybrid of the Wizard of Oz, Oddly Normal and Alice in Wonderland completely uncensored creating a unique comedy in the style that has made Skottie young famous.
The story focuses on a little girl name Gertrude who wishes to go to a world that is filled with laugher, magic, and joy. This wish came true. Upon landing in Fairyland Gertrude wants to go home, but in order for her to return she has to find a key to a certain door. It has been 27 years since she has begun her search with no luck in finding the key. Through these 27 years she has caused mayhem and destruction all throughout Fairyland resulting in bizarre and chaotic, and funny situations as her search continues.
This comic captures extreme behaviors, which creates amusing situations that people can relate to. In its initial pages the comic opens up to Gertrude and the Moon, who is narrating the story, having an argument. The argument is over the amount of noise the Moon is making. As a result, Gertrude decides to blow up the Moon and the Stars to obtain quiet as she is going on her journey. In the real world this is relatable as everybody has had a noisy neighbor and has wanted to do something to make them quiet. Furthermore, Gertrude decides to rob a casino and gets caught and is being lectured before she is going to be punished, which everybody has experienced. Rather then just taking the lecture she answers back and fights her way out of her imprisonment, which is what most of us in the real world wish we could do. The comic is chaotic and features Gertrude and her guide Larry’s adventure, as they don’t take any thing lying down.
Nobody has ever doubted Skottie Young’s artistic ability as he has produced many different covers for Marvel. Yet nobody had expected him to deliver a chaotic, funny, comic in a compelling story that draws the reader in. I Hate Fairyland is an enjoyable, lovable, comic that make us as comic fans love I Hate Fairyland.
I Hate Fairyland is a great comic and the first volume can be purchased here.
